Simple fact: when I hear the word *cybersecurity*, I NEVER think, *“Yep, that’s my area.”*

Me, a cybersecurity expert? Excuse me while I try to stop ROTFLOL. Not only do I not work in IT, but I couldn’t configure a firewall if you provided the exact number of bricks required, how-to instructions, fitted me with coveralls and mixed up the mortar for me.

But…I do use email every single day, both at work and at home. I click on links. I share documents. I handle proprietary and sensitive information. I digitally interact with colleagues, customers and partners, and personal friends.

**Uh-oh. Maybe cybersecurity is my area.** Because the small and seemingly unimportant decisions I make every day definitely contribute to keeping our whole organization as well as my own household safe.

The *“Don’t Make It Easy for Them”* message is a simple one, but it holds a lot of relevance for all of us.

Cybercriminals don’t need to outsmart the most sophisticated technology to hack into an organization or your personal accounts. Often, they just need for one unsuspecting and well-meaning person to click a link, open an attachment, share information or respond to a convincing request without hitting pause to ask, ‘*For real?’*

That person could be you, multi-tasking as most of us do in our deadline-heavy days. It might be me, distracted by the poor fit of my coveralls as I bend to the action of adding another brick to the firewall.

Scary, yes? And an extremely valuable reminder that we have more control than we might think.

We CAN make it harder for ‘them.’

**It starts with everyday choices**

The idea of cybersecurity is multi-faceted and can sometimes be less about understanding complicated technology and more about developing good habits.

- If I receive an unexpected work or personal email asking me to click a link, I should pause before I click. Do I recognize the vendor? Did I request information from them?
- If someone asks in email or via a phone call for information that I wouldn’t normally share, I must dig in to determine whether the request is genuine.
- If something looks unusual or feels a little off for ANY reason, I should ask a question. Or several questions.
- And if I make a mistake, I MUST report it. IMMEDIATELY.

Right? I MUST REPORT IT IMMEDIATELY.

Nobody gets everything right all the time. We’re human and mistakes happen. What matters most are the actions we take next.

If I were to accidentally click on something suspicious, my instinct might be to hope it was nothing harmful and move on. Maybe our CEO really does have an ‘Urgent Task/Gift Card’ purchase request – but is it weird that he’s never asked me for anything even remotely similar before?

What if the email from the ‘micros0ft.com’ domain is malware, or the ‘https://yourbank.com’ hyperlink actually routes you to ‘http://malicious-hacker-site.ru’?

Reporting the incident immediately gives the people who can help a real-time opportunity to take remedial actions to stop the spread.

**We don't have to be experts**

The leading perception says cybersecurity belongs to the people who understand the technical side of the business. And without a doubt, IT and security teams have an incredibly important role to play. They have the expertise and tools to protect our systems and respond to threats.

But the IT teams can’t do it alone. They need for the rest of us to help as the first line of awareness, and that translates to cybersecurity belonging in every department and in every role.

- It belongs in the email we double-check before sending.
- It belongs in the passwords we protect.
- It belongs in the information we share – or choose not to share.
- It belongs in the suspicious message we report.
- It belongs in the conversations we have with our colleagues when something doesn’t seem quite right.

**Small things add up**

The good news? None of this feels particularly complicated. It’s about taking those few extra seconds to think.

- Is that email really from who it says it’s from?
- Was I expecting that attachment?
- Does this request make sense?
- Am I sharing this information with the right person?

If the answer isn’t clear, ask. Perform your due diligence. Those few seconds could be some of the most important in the history of your role.

**It's everyone's responsibility**

The *“Don’t Make It Easy for Them”* message doesn’t require us to become cybersecurity professionals.

It is very clearly asking us to be aware, because security isn’t just about technology. It’s also about people, behavior and culture, and the roles every single one of us play in the organization and in our personal lives.

It’s Cybersecurity Awareness Month and I’m certainly not going to pretend that I suddenly and miraculously understand everything there is to know about cybersecurity. But I will continue to work hard to be more mindful of the decisions I make every day.

- I’ll pause before I click.
- I’ll question things that don’t look right.
- I’ll protect the information I’m trusted with.
- And if I make a mistake, I’ll speak up.

Because when each of us takes those small steps, we make it that much harder for them.

On another note, I’ve run out of bricks…

**Stay safe!!**
